For today’s KAP photos I had chosen the Malakow-Tower at the Fürst Hardenberg Colliery.
Malakow towers are imposing, brick towers made of stone, reminiscent of a castle. They got their name from Fort Malakow on the Crimean peninsula. Many early Malakow towers were demolished and only a few examples remain in the Ruhr area. The winding tower of the Fürst Hardenberg colliery is thus one of the few remaining structures of this kind and is a listed building. This is what is said on the website about slagheaps and industrial culture in the Ruhr region.
Since it’s been a while since I took some aerial photos here, it was time to try my luck again. The last time I was here was in 2017.
Most of the remaining colliery facilities and also parts of a colliery housing estate were demolished in the 1990s. A goods distribution centre with three large halls was then built between the Hardenberg harbour and the railway line. A distribution centre of a large bakery has become an immediate neighbour of the cultural monument.
The wind was not too strong, but my flare easily carried the Minimal rig with the Canon S110 on a pendulum into the air. I would have liked a bit more height, but unfortunately I could only hook the rig into the line after the kite had left the calmer ground areas.
You can see the Malakow Tower in the background of the last pictures I took from the canal port on the other side of the canal.
